It’s true that nature does it best! The Bois Lele swizzle stick is made from the dried wood stems of the Quararibea turbinata tree (aka the “swizzle stick” tree!) which is an aromatic plant native to the Caribbean, and it’s commonly used in making Tiki drinks like the Ti’ Punch, and Queen’s Park Swizzle.
What’s a Swizzle?
The Smuggler’s Cove book states: “A swizzle is a style of cocktail that’s defined by how it’s made (with the ingredients being vigorously mixed together with crushed ice using a swizzle stick), rather than by which ingredients go into it.”
From around the late 1860s, when ice became more readily available, the “swizzle stick” made its debut, and the drink style was born. These drinks were “frothed” or “frisked into effervescence” by putting a stick (called a bois lélé) into the glass and rubbing it between one’s palms.
